The South Carolina Gamecocks once had the third-ranked recruiting class in the country, but a disappointing 2014 season led to multiple defections from the 2015 class. The class is now ranked 17th according to ESPN. The Gamecocks weren’t expecting any late developments on signing day, but defensive end Arden Key changed that. The 24th-ranked player in ESPN’s rankings, Key had been verbally committed to the Gamecocks, but he switched his allegiance Monday to LSU.
The Gamecocks will definitely miss Key’s presence on the line, especially after a terrible performance from the defensive ends in 2014, but junior college transfer Dexter Wideman will help ease the pain. Wideman, who spent time at Camden Military Academy, is already on campus and will take full part in South Carolina’s spring training.
After securing offensive lineman Christian Pellage’s commitment, there’s only one player the Gamecocks will be uncertain of leading into National Signing Day. Cornerback Rashad Fenton is leaving his decision to National Signing Day, but he is expected to sign with the Gamecocks. He’s also visited Louisville, but after visiting for South Carolina’s largest recruiting event he seemed to fit in well in Columbia.
South Carolina’s class seems to be set, but every year there seems to be some late drama. We’ll find out tomorrow what the 2015 class will really be made of.
